Miriam goes back to the cousin’s without the child and mourns, telling them that the child died of a fever. The deformed cousin mourns with her and they find a common ground, reconciling their relationship.
The man trembles and stares upward. His feelings well up in him like an earthquake, subtly rumbling and breaking him like a man made of clay, he crumbles with regret. “I have been such a bitter old man, the child was sweet and I never knew him. He wanted to play and I did not give him any love. He was a good baby and now he is gone. It is too late and I have been so mean, and mean to you also.” Miriam breaks down and he reaches out to her. He awkwardly consoles her as he convulses with his emotions and regrets. It is both beautiful and repulsive, but we are overwhelmed with the spiritual grace beyond his painful awkwardness.
