Scene – Miriam in Shop with brother and mother, months later

Miriam is sewing, but moping, still wiping away a tear as she works.

Brother speaks to mother, kind, but complaining about Miriam.  “Mother, she is still so immovable in her sadness.  We all miss Father, but Miriam is overtaken with grief still.  Our customers are put off by this.  They ask for her and she comes out, but is not the great help that she once was.  I fear we will lose our standing as the great outfitter, not only with Father gone, but with her terrible comportment, she will drive people away.
Also – I cannot discuss this with her, but she has not taken any days in private since father died, she just sews.  I fear that she must be coming to the shop during her unclean times – she has not missed a day here in 3 months!  My customers are devout men; we are breaking the law.  Mother – you must take care of her!”
