Solution Atonement

Scene – Miriam and mother at home, the same day that Brother bid mother to correct Miriam.

Mother addresses what brother has spoken about not missing work. Miriam admits she is still grieving, but also complains that she has not had any unclean times of bleeding since she was robbed. She also is swelling in her belly and breasts, and cannot eat. Mother is horrified.

Mother – “Oh this is horrible. You are with child. But, no one must know you were defiled! You will be stoned. You are betrothed and we have spent the dowry to recover from the robbery. We cannot return it and we will be stoned also.”

Miriam sobs. Mother considers as she makes a wet cloth to soothe her daughter. We must send you away. I will think of something to say to Yaacov later. My cousin has a deformed uncle and you can go take care of him. We will tell my cousin that you are a widow, that your husband was killed in the wars and has no kin and that you will make a good maidservant. When he returns, we will tell Yaacov that you died.

Miriam – “Dead??! Oh, Mother, a maidservant???!!”

Mother – “It is absolutely better than stoning. You will go tomorrow.”
