Scene – at Orna’s house
Over the years, Miriam sees Orna’s family and the boy, now named Doron,
meaning “gift.” He is a wonderful child and has a special liking for her.
As he grows, he often says how fond he is of Miriam and how he has always felt
there is something familiar and right about seeing her. Sometimes she
slips, calling him “Chaim,” but then makes light that she is blessing him for a
good life. Miriam is often moved to almost tell him how he belongs to her,
but always backs away from the truth. Each time, in her mind, she looks to
the temple and asks for God’s forgiveness for lying and for the debt she owes
this child to be his mother.
